I have been asked why it is that I am opposed to genetically modified organisms? Why should I be so anti-science? Do I want us all to live in the Dark Ages? I don’t. I think that our understanding of the genome would be a wonderful advancement of our civilisation, if it stayed in controlled conditions in the science laboratories rather than being farmed out for profit. Look at capitalism’s safety record on nuclear waste, dioxins, PCBs, agrochemicals, greenhouse gas emissions, arms sales and landmines and ask yourself why we should trust them to alter the genetic make-up of our crops? What next? Nanotechnology? Why not invent particles that are so small that we can absorb them easily through our skin, potentially causing untold harm, and put them in... sunscreen! Now that really is clever.
